
For the most part, sweating is healthy. Like during and after a vigorous workout. It’s your body’s way of cooling down and getting rid of toxins. But not all sweating is necessary, or especially healthy. Including night sweats. Night sweats that regularly leave you waking up and drenched in sweat are often caused by an underlying medical issue or hormonal imbalance. The body is filled with chemical messengers in the adrenal glands, ovaries, thyroid gland, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract, and your hormones are constantly going through stages of production due to all the activity. All the changes and fluctuations can put you at risk for a hormonal imbalance—especially women, although men are also susceptible to hormonal disruptions. Menopause is the most common cause of night sweats, and it can be worsened with alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, stress, and other lifestyle elements.
