Don’t Overlook Proper Nutrition When You Cook

Published December 3, 2014

If you walk through the supermarket and wonder which foods are healthy or unhealthy, do not feel alone. Nutrition is a broad and confusing subject. The article below will help clear up some of this confusion concerning nutrition.

Although salad is a healthy dish, the salad dressing can ruin the nutritional value. Creamy dressings contain more calories and fat and are often lower in nutrients than vinaigrettes. Either pick a vinaigrette or whip up a homemade dressing that includes olive oil and vinegar. Walnuts can also inject taste into your salad, along with other fruits and vegetables.

It is important to include fiber in your diet. You will feel less hungry by eating enough fiber. This will also help lower your blood cholesterol levels. Fiber helps you to lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, too.

When you are on the go, carrying protein bars and nutritional supplements is always a smart idea. May you have noticed it is difficult to get a regular meal in an airport lately. Clearing security checks, sitting in terminals waiting for flights, and taking flights with no meals are regular occurrences. Keep a few bars with you just in case you get hungry or need some energy.

Ground Turkey

Select lean turkey products in place of ground beef in recipes. Ground turkey has far less fat and calories. Make sure you pick up the ground turkey breast since turkey dark meat has a very similar nutrition profile as ground beef. Also be aware that some brands of ground turkey use both dark and breast meat, so you will not get the full benefits of less saturated fat.

If you want to know more about nutrition, there are plenty of online and offline publications that can answer your questions. At a basic level, though, it is important to know what helps and harms your health. A little bit of nutritional knowledge can help anyone make better food choices.
