
As anyone who suffers from sleep apnea knows, a poor night’s sleep usually correlates with feelings of exhaustion the following day. Even after a full night’s sleep, it seems as if the body never had a chance to rest—a result of the disrupted breathing that occurs throughout the night with sleep apnea. Typical symptoms of sleep apnea include snoring, trouble breathing, nightmares, and somnolence the next day. In addition, many people with the disorder report difficulty focusing and loss of cognition, and experts say these symptoms may go deeper than just a fuzzy head from lack of sleep. A study conducted by researchers at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles found that memory loss can actually be a serious symptom of sleep apnea, one that could signal a potential problem in the brain.
